Written in Chinese characters, the pronunciation and spelling of Dong Bang Shin Ki's name (which means 'Rising Gods of the East') has several versions, depending on the country. In Korea, the Chinese characters read as Dong Bang Shin Ki (an alternative spelling is Dong Bang Shin Gi). In Japan, they read as Tohoshinki. In China, the characters read as Tong Vfang Xien Qi, and it is from this that their international name, TVXQ or sometimes TVfXQ, is derived. Dong Bang Shin Ki often refer to themselves, both in interviews and in songs, as TVXQ.

The first member to join Dong Bang Shin Ki was Junsu. He was first seen participating in the talent show 2002 Survival Audition Hee Jun vs. KangTa Battle in which H.O.T.'s Moon Hee Jun and KangTa were judges. The Trax's Rose and Attack and Super Junior's Eunhyuk were also in this show. Junsu's stage name is Xiah, or Xiah Junsu - Xiah is pronounced as 'shee-ah', and is short for Asia, which is pronounced as 'a-shee-ah' by Koreans. It reflects Junsu's desire to be successful in not only Korea, but throughout Asia.

Yunho was the second to join, securing his place in the group after winning first place in a dance competition. Often, the eldest member of the group is chosen as the leader but Yunho is in fact the leader of Dong Bang Shin Ki, despite being only the second eldest. Yunho's stage name is U-Know or U-Know Yunho - U-Know is pronounced as 'you know', and is similar in sound to the pronunciation of his name Yunho. It is also said to mean 'Yunho Knows You', referring to his ability to understand the other members of the group as Dong Bang Shin Ki's leader, as well as understanding the fans.

JaeJoong, the eldest member, was next to join the group, selected from an audition of 5,000 people. His vocals won him first place, making him the main vocal of Dong Bang Shin Ki. He chose for himself the stagename of YoungWoong JaeJoong. YoungWoong means 'hero' in Korean, and so internationally he is often known simply as Hero.

Changmin is the youngest of the group, and joined after impressing the judges with his vocal talents during an audition. His stage name is Choikang Changmin, Choikang meaning 'the best' in Korean. Internationally, though, he is often known simply as Max.

The final member to join the group was Yoochun, who had lived in America for four years before he was discovered by SM Entertainment at a singing competition. After winning the competition, he was given the opportunity to sign with SM Entertainment and move to Korea. His stagename is Micky Yoochun. Micky was his English name while he lived in America, and when written in Chinese characters, the name Micky also means 'hidden weapon'.

Dong Bang Shin Ki debuted at the end of 2003 with this lineup, and have not changed members since their debut. SM Entertainment did plan to add a sixth member who would have been Chinese, supposedly to aid Dong Bang Shin Ki in breaking into the Chinese market, but fans protested this and the plan was never carried through.

Their first appearance was on December 26, 2003, during a BoA and Britney Spears showcase. They performed their debut single Hug, as well as an acappella version of O Holy Night with BoA. Shortly afterwards, they released Hug as an actual single, with a photobook, as well as their second single The Way U Are, also with a photobook.

In October of 2004, Dong Bang Shin Ki released their first album, TRI-ANGLE. TRI-ANGLE reached #1 on the Korean Music Charts, and was a mixture of pop, soft R&B and ballads. The title track of the album, a much harder, rockier song called Tri-Angle, featured both BoA and The TRAX in both the song and the music video. In December that same year, they released a special Christmas album, Christmas Gift from Dong Bang Shin Ki, which contained Dong Bang Shin Ki singing Christmas songs such as The First Noel and Silent Night, Holy Night.

After such huge success, Dong Bang Shin Ki's official fanclub was created. Fans chose for the club the name Cassiopeia, which is a constellation of stars that can be found near the constellation of the Big Dipper. The constellation of Cassiopeia has five stars, and Dong Bang Shin Ki has five members. When traced on a standard alphanumeric QWERTY keyboard, the letters TVFXQ roughly trace the same shape as the Cassiopeia constellation.

Determined to keep the interest of their international fans, November of 2004 saw the release of an international version of their Hug single, with the songs re-recorded in English. In January of 2005, they released a Chinese version of their TRI-ANGLE album, with contained several bonus tracks, Chinese versions of some of their songs.

Even before the release of their second album, Dong Bang Shin Ki began to break into the Japanese market. April of 2005 saw them release their first Japanese single, Stay With Me Tonight, and then a second single in July of the same year, Somebody To Love.

September of 2005 saw Dong Bang Shin Ki release their second album, Rising Sun. This album contained more R&B, and once again a few songs with harder, rockier elements. They also did another song with The TRAX, called Free your mind. This album was once again a huge success, gaining them huge popularity in not only Korea but also Japan, China, the rest of Asia, and even overseas.

In November that same year, they released their third Japanese single, My Destiny. Busy as ever, December saw them release a single with the newly debuted boyband Super Junior, Show Me Your Love. Although professional rivals, both bands are personal friends, having trained together before debut.

In 2005 and 2006, Dong Bang Shin Ki took park in a show called Banjun Theatre, acting in their own one or two episode mini dramas. Other artists have also taken part in the Banjun Theatre series. Dong Bang Shin Ki's episodes were First Love (which had two parts), The Masked Fencer which featured only Yunho and Micky, Yunho's Tokyo Holiday, Dangerous Love which had massive popularity with fans due to the nature of the storyline (Junsu and Changmin are kidnapped by a crazy fangirl, and JaeJoong reads a fanfiction where he and Yunho are in a gay relationship, and begins to think that Yunho is really in love with him, misunderstanding everything that his friend says and does), Finding Lost Time, Uninvited Guest and The Most Unforgettable Girl. The general idea of the Banjun Theatre dramas is that each one has an unexpected twist at the very end.

Dong Bang Shin Ki started 2006 off by releasing their fourth Japanese single in March, Ashita wa kuru kara, which contained the Japanese version of one of their first Korean singles, The Way U Are. Their first Japanese album, Heart, Mind and Soul, was released at the end of the same month, mostly made up of their Japanese singles, with a few new tracks and some special, acappella versions. Their fifth Japanese single, which contained the Japanese version of Rising Sun, was released in April 2006.

In June 2006, Dong Bang Shin Ki released their single Dong Bang's Tuhon, or Fighting Spirit of the East, which was the official Korean image song for the 2006 World Cup. This was followed by their sixth Japanese single at the end of the month, Begin, then in August their seventh Japanese single, Sky, which hit #6 on the Oricon weekly chart.

Early 2006 also saw Dong Bang Shin Ki's first live concert, 2006 LIVE CONCERT: RISING SUN. Due to a knee injury, JaeJoong was replaced in many of the dances, but was still present and singing. During the concert, Dong Bang Shin Ki performed Yeoubi (Like weather…), first as a solo by Yoochun, then again as a group. This song was written by Yoochun. The live audio of the concert was released as an audio CD in July, but the concert itself was not released as a DVD until 2007, when it was finally released in January as 2 DVDs with bonus features, plus a photobook.

Released in September 2006, Dong Bang Shin Ki's third Korean album, "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap, sold more than 100,000 copies in it's first month of sale in South Korea alone. Once again, the album saw a mix of styles, with the title track containing heavy R&B and techno beats, while the second promotion track, Balloons, is a bubblegum pop song. "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap, both the song, the album art, the music video and performance visual, had them sporting a very manly, cool image, in stark contrast to Balloons, in which the music video and performance visual had them dressed up in animal costumes and other child like themes such as the Smurfs, Snow White, and Harry Potter. The album was re-released in November of the same year, with new versions of Balloons and Get me some, and an extra track Ne gyeote sumswil su ittdamyeon (White Lie...), which was composed by Junsu. There was two versions of this re-release, one containing a DVD of their mini drama series, Vacation, the only DVD release of it.

Vacation was originally shown at Yonsei University. The storyline is that the members of Dong Bang Shin Ki begin to fight with each other due to the stress of their heavy schedules, prompting their management to split them up and send them off on holiday, where each member has an adventure of their own while attempting to relax and soul-search. Yunho meets a fan who has a terminal illness, Changmin and Junsu go to a remote village where they begin to help out an old couple and an elderly lady who hasn't seen her grandson since he was a young boy, JaeJoong is mistaken for a member of a gang and has to take on his life, and Yoochun goes back in time to himself as a child. The group also recorded an original soundtrack for the drama, consisting of the tracks Geurigo... (Holding back the tears) and Beautiful Thing and instrumental versions of both. While Geurigo... (Holding back the tears) was performed by the group, Beautiful Thing was performed by Junsu.

Also in September was the release of Zhang Li Yin's debut single, Timeless, which was a soulful ballad duet with Junsu.

October of 2006 did not go so smoothly, as Yunho was rushed to the hospital during the filming of a variety show after drinking a beverage given to him by a girl who later turned out to be an anti-fan. The initial rumours stated that the drink was laced with poison, but later on it was confirmed by official sources to have been superglue, and Yunho was uninjured although shocked by the incident. The bottle came with a threatening letter, which had not been read before Yunho drank from the bottle. The letter stated that the anti-fan hated Dong Bang Shin Ki, and found them stuck up and talentless. The anti-fan, a teenage girl, was later found and taken into custody, but Yunho requested that charges not be pressed against her, as he has a younger sister her age and wanted to show her forgiveness. The charges were dropped and the anti-fan was released. Yunho's close friend, Super Junior's Hee Chul, reacted aggressively to the event, posting scathing criticism on his Cyworld directed at anti-fans, who then retaliated by threatening to come after him and his two close friends and bandmates, Kibum and Han Kyung, although they never followed through with the threat. Dong Bang Shin Ki carried on their promotional activities for the rest of the month without Yunho, until the 22nd of October where he finally rejoined them for a performance on KBS Music Bank.

November 2006 also saw the group releasing their eighth single miss you, which contained the Japanese version of "O"-Jun.Ban.Hap, which is known in Japan as "O"-Sei.Han.Go.

But there was more drama for the group at the end of November, this time with JaeJoong. A man with the family name of Han claimed that he was the biological father of JaeJoong, who was using the family name of Kim. He filed a lawsuit against the Kim family, stating that he wanted custody of JaeJoong. It was revealed that he had divorced from JaeJoong's birthmother shortly after JaeJoong's birth, giving sole custody of JaeJoong to JaeJoong's birth mother, who had later on given up her child to the Kim family, but JaeJoong's father had not known about this. JaeJoong posted an entry on the official fanclub website, stating that he had found out a few years ago that he was adopted, and that he had been able to get in touch with his birth mother and meet her sometimes, although his birth father couldn't be found. He also stated that he wanted to live as Kim JaeJoong, not Han JaeJoong, and that he was upset that his family history had been exposed to the public in such a way. Just one day later, JaeJoong's birth father dropped the lawsuit, and apologised for causing uneasiness to his son.

At the end of November 2006, the MKMF Music Festival was held and the group won four awards, including Best Group and Artist of the Year. In December at the 16th Music Seoul Festival, they won three more awards, as well as another two at the 21st Golden Disk Awards 2006 later in the same month. At the end of December, at the SBS Gayo Awards 2006, they received yet two more awards. However, while fans were ecstatic at the band's award wins, critics were less than pleased, stating that results of the Daesang awards, of which Dong Bang Shin Ki won four from four major Korean music awards, were not really determined by the public, but rather "determined by mouse clicks of passionate fans". Several artists, including Lee Hyori, Rain, PSY and YG Family, were absent from the awards - although some of the artists claimed the reason was due to a busy schedule, it is believed that they were, in fact, boycotting the awards.

After celebrating their 3 year anniversary on the 26th of December 2006, the new year started off with the group's ninth Japanese single, Step by Step, released in January 2007, then their tenth in March, Choosey Lover. Shortly after the release of Choosey Lover, their second Japanese album was released, Five in the Black. Once again, the album contained their Japanese singles, with a few new tracks, and three special tracks including their cover of the Disney song A Whole New World. Peaking at #6 on the Oricon Daily Albums Chart and #10 on the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart, the album sold over 26,686 copies in it's first week.
